Odoo vs Xero or MYOB: when does a growing business need more than accounting software?

How to tell whether Xero or MYOB still fits your business, or whether you have outgrown accounting software and need an ERP such as Odoo.

Published 14 October 2026

They solve different problems

Xero and MYOB are built around accounting: invoices, bills, bank feeds, GST reporting and payroll. Odoo is an ERP, a set of connected business apps that covers sales, purchasing, inventory, manufacturing, projects, field service and accounting in one database. Comparing them is less like choosing between two competitors and more like deciding whether accounting is still the only thing you need to run in one place.

Signs you may have outgrown accounting software

Quotes live in one tool, stock in a spreadsheet, jobs in someone's inbox, and invoices are rebuilt by hand in the accounting system. Staff re-enter the same customer or order details in several places. Month-end involves reconciling systems against each other. You cannot see stock, orders and cash in one view. If those sound familiar, the problem is the gaps between systems, not the accounting package.

What Xero and MYOB do well

They are quick to set up, familiar to Australian bookkeepers and accountants, and built around local requirements such as GST and BAS reporting and payroll. For a business whose complexity is mostly financial, they can be the right tool for a long time, and a move to an ERP should not be made just because the business has grown.

Where an ERP such as Odoo changes things

When orders, stock, purchasing, jobs and invoicing sit in one system, the data flows without re-entry and reports draw from one source. Odoo's apps are modular, so you can start with one flow, such as sales to invoice, and add others later. Before moving accounting across, check that your Australian requirements, including GST and BAS reporting, payroll and bank feeds, are covered by the Odoo edition and setup you are considering.

You do not always have to replace it

A common middle path is to keep Xero or MYOB for accounting and connect it to Odoo for the operational side, so invoices and payments sync without double entry. That reduces risk and keeps your accountant's workflow intact, and you can revisit moving accounting later.

Common questions

Can Odoo replace Xero or MYOB?

It can, as Odoo includes accounting, but whether it should depends on your requirements. Check that GST and BAS reporting, payroll and bank feeds are covered for your setup, and involve your accountant in the decision.

Can Odoo work alongside Xero or MYOB?

Yes. Many businesses keep their accounting package and integrate it with Odoo so invoices, payments and customer records sync, avoiding double entry.

How do I know if I have outgrown accounting software?

If you are reconciling several systems by hand, re-entering the same data, or cannot see orders, stock and cash in one place, the gaps between systems are the problem, and an ERP may help.

Is Odoo harder to implement than Xero?

Yes, because it covers more of the business. Xero can be set up quickly, while an ERP needs scoping, data preparation and training. A focused first release keeps that manageable.
